Can CBD Oil Give You Migraines?

When considering using a new health and wellness product, it’s important to know and understand all of the benefits and potential side effects. While migraines are not a widely-reported side effect of cannabidiol, or CBD, there is always potential that they could occur.

Side Effects of CBD

As with most products, there are side effects to using cannabidiol. Some of these include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Light-headedness

Furthermore, one study noted a drop in blood pressure and increased wakefulness. However, noticeably missing from these reports is any indication of a headache or migraine. While this doesn’t mean that they don’t occur, it seems there would be more reports of them if that were the case.

There are also no reports of allergic reactions from this product; however, if one were to be allergic, a strong headache or migraine could certainly result. It’s important to remember that every person is different and therefore will tolerate CBD differently.

Consider Your Dosing

If you do experience a migraine or strong headache, it may be necessary to consider your dosing. Do your research and make sure that you are taking in the proper amount for your body size. Most studies show that humans can handle a large amount of this product, but some have shown a risk of liver damage and harmful interactions with other medications.

Therefore, it may not be the cannabidiol itself causing a migraine, it could be the result of these interactions. It’s imperative that you be mindful of the amount and frequency in which you are applying or ingesting this product.

An Issue of Purity?

If a user develops a migraine after taking cannabidiol, another potential cause could be the purity of the item itself. At this time, there are thousands of these products on the market and none of them are regulated by the FDA. Therefore, it is vital that you do your research on the company producing the brand you choose to buy.

Some manufacturers that are more concerned with quantity over quality may choose to use harsh chemicals or pesticides when growing their Cannabis Sativa plants which make their way into the oil. Others may use highly processed carrier oils which contain harmful contaminants. Try to source your CBD from reputable companies and from those located in areas where it is actually legal to produce.

Can It Actually Help with Migraines?

Though it’s believed that CBD products won’t help prevent migraines, research is limited and will likely stay that way based on the issue of legality. Furthermore, despite a changing mindset regarding cannabidiol, it still carries the stigma of being a harmful, psychoactive drug.

So, while it may not prevent migraines, it can help with some of the symptoms including pain and inflammation. As always, consult your doctor before trying cannabidiol for migraines and to rule out any underlying issues and interactions with medication you may be taking.
