What CBD Products Are FDA Approved?

CBD products have seen a huge boost in popularity over the past decade. This is largely due to the numerous studies and research that points to the positive effects of CBD. Before you buy a product, it’s important to do research to make sure what you’re buying is safe. One of the most common questions we get asked is what CBD products are FDA approved?

What Is the FDA?

The Food Drug Administration (FDA) is a federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The agency helps ensure the safety and security of drugs, biological products and medical devices. They also ensure the safety of the nation’s food supply and cosmetics.

In order to get a product FDA approves, the manufacturer must conduct lab, animal and human testing and send their results to the agency. The FDA will take the results of the tests and determine rather or not the benefits of the product outweighs the risks. This process can often take up to two and a half years before final approval.

What CBD Products Are FDA Approved?

As of right now, the FDA has only approved one CBD product.

That product is a prescription drug that is prescribed to treat two rare, severe forms of epilepsy. It is currently illegal to market CBD by adding it to food or labeling it as a dietary supplement.

If a CBD product on the market claims that it is FDA approved, it is not and should be avoided. The FDA claims that certain CBD products are being marketed with unproven medical claims. As mentioned earlier, it is imperative that you do your research before buying a CBD product.

Why Is Only One Product Approved?

Despite the numerous studies that point to the benefits of CBD, why is one product approved? This is largely due to the fact that medical testing is still in its infancy. Due to the legal grey area medical marijuana, CBD and THC products are currently in, it’s difficult to accurately test their effects.

More so, we don’t have a proper grasp of what CBD does to our health in the longterm. While there’s nothing to sustainably prove that CBD has a longterm negative effect on our livers, it is a concern among some in the industry. We also don’t have a full grasp of CBDs’ effects on the developing brain.

What Are Some of the Side Effects of CBD

One of the main reasons for the spike in popularity is its shortlists of side effects when compared to other pharmaceutical drugs. While other drugs with massive lists of side effects receive the FDA stamp of approval, CBD’s list is relatively short. There have been no cases of death or overdose attributed to CBD.

Some of the side effects include drowsiness, diarrhea and stomach pains. Since research and testing are still young, we don’t fully understand the longterm effects. As time goes on, long term effects will become more and more clear.

What Are the Benefits of CBD?

Even though the vast majority of CBD products aren’t FDA approved, there are still numerous studies and reports that point to its effectiveness. Here are some of the things that CBD products can help with:

  • Reduce pain
  • Prevent osteoarthritis pain
  • Bladder cancer rates drop in CBD users
  • Reduced anxiety levels
  • Reduced frequency in seizures

While we may not know the long-term health effects of CBD, there are plenty of studies that point towards its effectiveness. Be sure to research CBD products before you purchase them.
