Can CBD Oil Provide Pain Relief to Pets?

More and more pet owners are turning to alternative treatments to find relief for their pets. In fact, 63% of veterinarians report that they are asked about CBD oil for pets at least once a month. It can be an effective treatment for many ailments and comes with few side effects.

How to Use CBD Oil for Disabled Dogs

One of the most exciting discoveries for those dog owners whose beloved pets suffer from seizures is how effective CBD oil is in treating it. In a recent study, dogs who suffer from seizures were given CBD oil over the course of 12 weeks. The dogs who received the oil had a 90% reduction in seizure activity versus the dogs just on a placebo.

The more CBD the dog was given, the more effective it was for reducing seizures. Currently, more research is needed to determine the exact dosage to give your dog to treat seizures.

You Can Use CBD Oil for Senior Dogs

One of the most heart-wrenching things for pet owners to watch is their pet slowly decline. They go from enjoying long hikes, playing fetch, and other fun activities to being in pain just trying to go to the bathroom. CBD oil works to alleviate many of the common ailments your senior pet faces so that you can help them enjoy their remaining days.

Reduces Pain and Inflammation

Cannabidiol has been shown to greatly reduce inflammation. A common ailment with aging dogs is hip and joint pain. This can be so debilitating that your dog becomes sedentary, refusing to leave their bed for long periods of time.

A recent study showed that 80% of the dogs in the study showed a dramatic decline in pain levels and an increase in activity levels. The participants of the study also had no noticeable side effects to report in their pets.

Reduce the Need for Other Medications

Another benefit of CBD oil is that it’s been discovered taking it reduces the amount of other medications your pet needs. It works by increasing the effectiveness of certain medications. This means that you can decrease the amount of opioids and NSAIDs your dog is currently taking. This can alleviate some of the bad side effects and long-term effects your dog might experience from narcotic pain relievers.

Increases Mobility

CBD oil is so effective at treating pet arthritis and other effects from aging that you’ll get to see your dog being active again. It works by decreasing pain and the inflammation that can cause stiff joints and more pain. It also helps to prevent further nerve and joint damage.

Other Uses of CBD Oil for Dogs

CBD oil works for your pet just like it works for people. Your dog has an endocannabinoid system that has receptors for cannabidiol. Introducing CBD oil will encourage their bodies to produce more of their own cannabidiol, which will help balance out their bodies.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

CBD oil has been shown to reduce anxiety in humans by up to 80%. It can be an effective treatment for pets that suffer from separation anxiety. Many also give their pets CBD oil to reduce the stress and anxiety they experience on the 4th of July from fireworks.

Decreases Nausea

If you have a pet with a sensitive stomach or is suffering from symptoms of nausea due to age or illness, CBD oil has been shown to decrease nausea in pets. It works by interacting with certain receptor sites in the gastrointestinal system. It can activate receptor sites for nausea and over time will reduce nausea.

Treats Gastrointestinal Problems

Many gastrointestinal problems can be traced back to the endocannabinoid system. Therefore, treating your dog with a CBD product can help restore balance to their system. It works with specific receptor sites found in their gut and helps to increase their body’s natural production of certain chemicals.

Is CBD Oil Safe for Pets?

There have been only a few studies done on the effects of CBD oil on pets. It’s only been shown to have mild side effects. Anecdotal evidence also shows that it seems to be safe for your pet and won’t cause any long-term harm. However, as with any medication, make sure you speak to your veterinarian before starting a CBD treatment on your pet.

Are There Any Side Effects?

There have been only a few reported minor side effects of using CBD oil for pets. Some of these side effects can also be caused by too much CBD. Watch your pet for any of the following:

  • Dry mouth
  • Excessive panting
  • Dribbling urine
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of balance
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood pressure

If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, decrease the amount that you give them.

What’s the Proper Dosage for My Pet?

The proper dosage of CBD for your pet can vary since CBD isn’t regulated. In the relatively little research that’s been done, the pets were started off on doses of about 2 mg per kg of body weight.  It’s best to start off with a smaller dose and then gradually increase as needed.

Most products also come with a recommended amount to start off with. Watch your pet for their response. If you give them a dose and it doesn’t seem to have an effect on them after about 15-20 minutes, then give them a little more.

Introducing CBD Oil to Your Pets the Right Way

There are a few products on the market that are specifically designed as CBD oil for pets. When choosing a product for your pet, make sure you choose one that is full-spectrum and has been verified by a 3rd party for potency. Some popular products include the following:

  • CBD oil
  • CBD tinctures
  • CBD gel caps
  • CBD dog treats

Since it’s not a federally regulated product, different brands can have varying levels of THC in it. Higher levels of THC has been shown to be lethal to dogs. A high-quality CBD oil should have less than 0.3% THC in it.
